A motivation is that I will soon have a new machine, a mac-mini. I plan to use this one unit for both my linux desktop and the mac-mini.
A quick note. "NUT" is "network UPS tools". This is the open source UPS support package you almost certainly want to use on a linux system.
It is a complex pain in the ass, but is ultimately useful.
